What it does

Know its limits

  • Organic vapors. NIOSH approved against certain organic vapors.
  • Not particulates. 3M says gas and vapor cartridges don't filter paint mist. Add a 5N11 or 5P71 filter with a 501 retainer.
  • No oxygen. Don't use below 19.5% oxygen or in IDLH or unknown concentrations.
  • No indicator. The 6001i version has an end-of-service-life indicator; this one doesn't.
Date it when you open it. 3M says to write the date on each cartridge when you first take it out of the package, and change it on an established schedule. Don't wait for smell or taste; change sooner if you notice either.
How to use

Fitting and change-out

  1. Check the NIOSH approval label to confirm the cartridge and facepiece combination.
  2. Align the bayonet and turn the cartridge a quarter turn onto the facepiece.
  3. For spray painting, add a 5N11 or 5P71 particulate filter with a 501 retainer.
  4. Do a user seal check every time you put the respirator on.
  5. Change on your written schedule, using 3M Service Life Software, or sooner if you smell, taste or feel irritation.

Program required. 3M says respirators must be used under a written OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 program, including medical evaluation, training and fit testing, and that misuse may result in sickness or death. Check your paint maker's SDS for the protection each product requires.
