40 grit is the heavy-removal sheet: stripping paint to bare metal and knocking down fiberglass resin and body filler. 3M's coarse aluminum oxide blend self-fractures to expose fresh cutting edges, so it keeps cutting instead of rounding over.
The mineral blend resists clogging, which matters when you're sanding filler. The 3-2/3 x 9 in size fits a standard hand block.
